Why Every Classroom Keeps Its Own Garden Bed
What four raised beds and forty children have taught us about patience.
Each of our four classrooms tends its own raised bed along the Friendly Street fence line — radishes for Seedlings’ older babies to pull (and occasionally taste, dirt and all), and a rotating cast of beans, pumpkins and sunflowers for Saplings and Young Oaks.
Nobody plans this as a formal lesson. It just turns out that a four-year-old who has watched a radish take six weeks to grow understands waiting in a way no worksheet ever taught them.
